The Pocket WifeThe Pocket Wife by Susan H. Crawford
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This is one of those books that should work really well – it has all the required elements of a suspense novel and all the requisite plot points – but instead of being a sympathetic character, the protagonist, Dana Catrell, a woman whose husband is a cheating scumbag and whose best friend has been murdered (with Dana as the prime suspect), she is merely annoying and becomes more so with every passing page. It’s not that she’s suffering from mental illness or possible delusions; rather it’s the tedious way these are trotted out over and over without an ounce of nuance. The one bright spot is the dogged detective, Jack Moss, who is likeable and relatable, if also somewhat damaged by time and circumstance. 2.5 stars rounded up to 3.
