With my golf buddies Rosie and Margy.
According to my mother, the day I was born the temperature in Toronto soared to 104F (40C). My mother, may she rest in peace, wasn’t averse to a bit of exaggeration if it aided a story, but I expect it was darn hot in a hospital room without the aid of air conditioning. All this to say I’ve always loved a hot day, crave heat the way a junkie might crave heroin, and without question summer is my absolute favorite season.
I also love golf. Not that I’m a great golfer — though this year I finally (after years of trying) broke 50 for 9 holes (with a 47!!!). We won’t talk about the next game, where I duffed my way to a 57. Seriously, that is one humbling game.
On the work front, I’ll admit I didn’t do a lot — as you might have noticed from my sporadic blog posts – but I did manage to finish the last draft of my next Step-by-Step book (Self-publishing: The Ins & Outs of Going Indie) which will be released in November. My fabulous editor, Ti Locke, completed her edits about a week ago, and so this month’s job it to finalize the book based on her extensive feedback. I’ll be posting more about the book in coming weeks.

moldy mattress!
My husband and I also purchased a house “in town,” about a 45-minute drive from the Lake Superior cottage (or camp as they are known in Northern Ontario) we’ve been living at the past year. We’re keeping the camp — it’s an amazing place — but winters can be harsh on the lake, and sometimes it’s nice to be in town after a long day of golf or a dinner out. Needless to say, we were excited to close on July 21, and while everything went well as far as the sale, our items in storage didn’t fare nearly as well. Seems there was a leak in the storage unit where we’d had our goods since the previous July, and beyond dishes and vases, pretty much all our belongings (artwork, furniture, books, bedding, small appliances, office printer/shredder etc.) were ruined beyond repair. We can only hope the storage company’s insurance will treat us fairly, though the process does seem to be taking a very long time. Thankfully, we have our place on the lake. And lawn chairs to sit in at the house!
All this to say it’s been a heckuva summer. I’ll try to be a bit better about posting on Saturdays going forward (though I am getting company mid September for a week so…no promises). I’m also going to be including a few more guest author posts, starting with Winona Kent next Saturday, September 16th.
Stay tuned…and thanks for reading!

Congrats on breaking 50 on 9 holes – and with a 47! I’m a fellow golfer and know how hard you worked to get to that milestone. I’m not yet there but hope to in the next year.
So will a hole-in-one be your next goal???
Hi Debra, had a friend visiting, so just getting to this. YES!! A hole in one is the goal! Good luck breaking 50!
I’m glad to hear you found your new forever home, and so close to the camp. (A far cry from the drive from Newmarket?) What town are you in. The Soo?
As for the mould and water damage and insurance blues and storage company attempts to make it go away, I think I see at least 4 plot points emerging there.
Take care.
Hi Susan, yes the Soo. Lots of plot points!!! Stay tuned for updates and thanks for reading.
What a horror show, Judy. So sorry you have had to go through this. Do NOT let the storage company persuade you to move anything moldy into your home. When I worked in public health, we had a number of cases where people became seriously ill from a mold infestation. Good luck with the insurance company – go get ’em!
Hi Madeleine, we were insistent that nothing mouldy came in, and thankfully the restoration company that the insurance hired agreed with us. Now we wait to see what the insurance will do vis-a-vis compensation.
Hi Judy, So sorry to hear about the water damage. Insurance companies like to “dawdle” but usually come through in the end. Enjoy the rest of the summer.
Thanks Joanne. Here’s hoping!
That’s a lot! So sorry about the losses. Insurance companies like to keep your money as long as possible. I hope you can get that resolved without anything further. To make you feel better about your golf, I used to strive to break 100 on a 9-hole, when I used to golf. I can hit very straight, but not very far. BUT, I did get two holes in one, one during a scramble tournament. Both par 3s with a 5 iron, my favorite club.
And you can keep summer! Give me winter, or a cool spring or fall, which might not exist anymore.
Kaye, I dream of getting a hole in one!! Congrats! And thanks for your good wishes, though i think I winter in Canada might cure you of your love of winter LOL.
Maybe not. I’ve lived in Montana, Minnesota, and Michigan.
Oh, I think Minnesota has us beat for sure when it comes to cold 🙂
Great Falls MT was the worst. -40, and -80 with the wind chill the week my first baby was born. But I love Minnesota?
Now that is crazy!!
That was meant to be an exclamation point, not a question mark.
Congrats about your new place in town. Sorry your storage unit leaked and belongings were ruined. Time to make new memories with new stuff? Enjoy the journey.
Mary
Thanks Mary — it will be “fun?” if we ever get a settlement to purchase things. We are already out of pocket $15,000 for necessities like beds, linens, towels and small appliances. We have no chairs or tables — using lawn furniture from cottage! And it’s been 6 weeks. So…not too much fun right now.
Thanks Beth. We were adamant that there was nothing mouldy coming into our house (the storage company tried, believe me). But the lake has been, as always, a welcome retreat.
I’m sorry about your “flood,” and hope you have success with the storage comany’s insurance.
Thanks so much Caroline. Still waiting!
Watch out for that mold! Two people I know have fought serious
illnesses due to mold in their homes that moved throughout their homes like a mysterious ghost. Sorry for your losses, but I am glad you have your lake place. As a Midwestern girl, I know the peace of a lake cottage vacation.
