Every Little Piece of Me by Amy Jones
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
An almost effortless read with great writing and plenty of humor and wry observation as Jones pokes fun of social media (love the bits where she mimics “followers” and their online comments), musical celebrities (how we love our drug-and-alcohol damaged heroes and heroines and angst for more all in the name of headlines and ratings) and reality TV (up next: Hot Dog Vendors of Atlanta), not to mention society’s obsession with all, including the very dark side of that obsession and the damage it can cause. The old adage “be careful what you wish for” resonates in every well-written page as protagonists Mags and Ava get exactly that and more.
I really wanted to give this book 5 stars, and indeed it was a solid 5 until the last two chapters. And honestly (as an author who has been bashed by some for an “ambiguous ending”– read reviews for Skeletons in the Attic) I’m not one of those people who need (or wants) everything tied up in a bow at the end. That said, I have read and reread the last 2 chapters and have absolutely no idea what Amy Jones was trying to do or say…so a 4.5 rounded down to 4 as GR doesn’t allow half measures. I really wish the end had been better. Or more clearly defined. Or that I was bright enough to understand it.
In fact, it’s probably me, not her. But I still have to knock off .5 stars. Because, well, this is my review, right?
