Superior Shores Press: Designing a Logo

by Judy Penz Sheluk | May 17, 2018 | My Publishing Journey, Superior Shores Press | 12 comments

Last week, I shared the news about starting Superior Shores Press. In today’s post, I’m going to unveil the logo, as well as the rationale behind it.

I started by hiring Hunter Martin, a graphic artist who has done design work for me in the past, as well as for several of my author friends. Unfortunately, I led Hunter astray with my initial request. “I’d like something like water with pine trees,” I told him, and he complied with two versions. While I leaned towards the design with the  symmetrical trees, it seemed too busy. I couldn’t imagine it, shrunk down, on the back or spine of a book. I could imagine it as a WELCOME TO TOWN NAME logo. I went back to Hunter and told him I’d think on it some more.

It was my husband, Mike, who came up with the concept of an outline of Lake Superior, maybe with a compass pointing North. I sent the idea to Hunter, and two days later he came back with this:

We were getting there. I liked the lake, the semi-circle,and the wavy font for Superior Shores Press, but I didn’t like the compass point. I also asked Hunter if he could change the color of the lake to match my primary website theme color (#004C7E RGB = 0/76/126). It’s all about branding, you know?

And now, the grand unveiling. Can’t wait to see it on the back of a book! Stay tuned…

You logo made me laugh. When I was in grade (elementary) school and we studied the Great Lakes, I remember looking at the outline of Lake Superior and thinking it looked like the figure of a wolf. After all these years, it still reminds me of a wolf.

Grace, it does sort of look like a wolf, doesn’t it? I love the shape, so distinctive.

Thanks Jennifer. It’s inspired by the beauty of Lake Superior. There’s a photo of it under the Superior Shores Press tab!

I like it, Judy. However, did you consider changing your “theme” color to the lighter blue instead of vice versa? I like the lighter blue a bit better. No matter, it’s a great logo! 🙂

Hi Michael, I love the deep blue! So not going to change it…but that’s color schemes, right? Very personal.

Thanks Susan. I liked the trees, but I knew it wouldn’t work on a book. Too much going on.
