I was talking to my friend Ron the other day and we got to talking about our favourite TV series. The criteria:
- It had to be completed.
- It had to have had a profound impact/memorable scene or have stayed with us over the years.
- We’ve watched more than once.
I thought about it long and hard. Made some adjustments. But here are some of my more recents:
The Sopranos: The last scene, Love it or hate it, it stayed with you.
Gilmore Girls: Any scene with Rory and Lorelei at dinner with Richard and Emily. (PS #Team Logan)
Breaking Bad: When Hank figures out Walt is Heisenberg.
Boardwalk Empire: Any scene with Steve Buscemi. Great ending!
Schitt$ Creek (hey, I’m Canadian): Patrick’s serenade to David. Stevie’s Cabaret performance. Moira’s clothes.
Honourable Mention: Better Call Saul. Any scene with Bob Odenkirk and Michael McKean.
And a blast from the past:
Columbo: Still holds up today.
Dallas: Who shot J.R.? Remember the hoopla about that?
Knot’s Landing: Donna Mills. Beautiful and evil.
LA Law: Great ensemble cast. I was a bit in love with Arnold Becker (Corbin Bernsen).
The Mary Tyler Moor Show: A single 30-something woman who made it on her own! Inspiring stuff for a teenage girl in the 70s.
The Love Boat (for my late mom): Always surprised that this hasn’t been remade. Or maybe it has and I missed it.
Honourable Mention: Murder, She Wrote (but only in Cabot Cove)
Those are my lists, what are yours?
Poldark–both renditions–the one made in the 1970s and the more recent one starring Aiden Turner. Also, love Desperate Romantics. Hmm, I’m seeing a connection here–Aiden Turner! 🙂
Hi Karen, I have never even heard of either of these shows. I wonder if they were only in the U.S.??
My favorite was The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
Kathleen, OMG yes, that is excellent — I believe it has one more season. Same writers ad Gilmore Girls (Amy Sherman-Palladino) and you can tell by the fast patter.
Tom, I never saw UNCLE (but do know that one of them become Ducky on NCIS). You’re right on Sopranos! The Wire — I tried but could not get into it (sorry). Never saw I Spy. LOVED The Mentalist. Thanks for your comments!
In no particular order:
The Man from UNCLE – I wrote stories about Solo and Illya when I was a kid.
The Sopranos – Taught me how to make my readers love despicable characters
The Wire – Possibly the best show to ever be on TV.
I Spy – Culp and Cosby had magical chemistry
The Mentalist – Patrick Jane was the best detective, ever!
