One of my great pleasures is introducing my readers to new authors, and introducing authors to new readers. I “met” Nannette Potter through my online group, Sisters in Crime Guppy Branch, and learning she had just released her debut novel, offered her a spot on my blog. I never know what a guest will write, but in Nannette’s case, she absolutely nailed the importance of making connections. A warm welcome to Nanette!
I recently released my thriller, “PIERCE THE DARKNESS,” marking my debut as an author. Opting for independent publishing, I decided to go “wide.” My book is now available through various platforms, including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, Apple, Google Play, and numerous other retailers who utilize Ingram for distribution. To celebrate this milestone, I organized a launch event attended by both family and friends, shared the exciting news on my personal social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram, and even held a book signing at a local bookstore. I soon realized I’d exhausted all my contacts. Now what?
Experts in the publishing industry insist the number one strategy for a writer to be successful is to build an email list. Excuses abound for my failure to take the sage advice. The last few years have been chaotic—with COVID and elderly parents with health issues. All my spare time went into writing, without any thought to marketing, promoting, or building an email list. I rationalized my lack of engagement to exhaustion, the never-ending shortage of hours in a day, and my focus on completing my novel. I had this idea that once my book was out in the world, everything would magically fall into place.
I was so naive.
I’d spent years working on my thriller, and to finally hold it in my hands was a phenomenal feeling. I wanted to share it with readers around the world. But I needed a roadmap to help me achieve my lofty goals. I needed a marketing strategy.
Create an Author Website
One of the first steps I took was to create my own author website. I realized the importance of making a strong first impression. At the time, my publishing budget was nearly depleted, so I had to roll up my sleeves and build the website myself. Drawing inspiration from other author websites I’d seen online, I spent a month crafting the site I envisioned. The end result was adequate, but it still needs a little panache. As soon as I can replenish my writing fund, revamping my website will be at the top of my priority list.
Create a Captivating Book Cover Ideal For Your Genre
Understanding what’s expected in terms of cover design for your genre can make or break your book’s success. This is one area where I spent the money for a professional designer who not only crafted an eye-catching cover but also produced a book trailer and other marketing visuals to use on Instagram and Facebook.
Choose Two Social Media Outlets
Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X, YouTube, Threads … the social media world can be overwhelming. Experts advise choosing two social media outlets for reader engagement. Since I dabble in Instagram and Facebook, I decided to start learning more about how to use posts to make connections with my readers. Talk about a learning curve! Thankfully I have two teenage granddaughters who are proficient in Instagram and TikTok, and they have been instrumental in helping me become proficient in posting content. Surprisingly, I’m having fun! Comments from people I don’t know make me happy.
Create a Mailing List
Building and using an email list is an excellent means of connecting with and engaging readers. Numerous email marketing services are available, with options ranging from free to those requiring a modest fee. I successfully linked a subscribe button on my website to my email marketing service.
As an avid reader and follower of several authors myself, I’ve developed a preference for those who actively engage with their readership through newsletters. These authors typically share their updates approximately once a month, sharing visually appealing and engaging content. My first newsletter is scheduled for release in October, and I’m eager for readers to find it both enjoyable and informative.
As I work on the second book of my series, I’m actively exploring ways to engage with readers and fellow writers. Currently, I’m producing a weekly video series every Monday, aimed at motivating and inspiring individuals interested in starting their own writing journey. It may not be professional or perfect, but it is authentic. And I believe that’s what readers want from their authors—a real connection.
Congrats to Nannette on her debut novel launch. I understand how all of her energy and time has gone into getting her book ready. I’m going down that road myself. Thanks for the tips on how to best market your novel once it’s ready for the world to read.
Thanks Debra for stopping by. Good luck with your book — you might want to check out Finding Your Path to Publication…I’m biased, since I wrote it, but it really is full of easy-to-digest and follow information. I wish I had something like that when I was starting my author journey.
Thank you, Judy!
I love your website. The header image is great–and not just because I’m a sucker for snowy scenes. And your trailer… I have to think seriously about adding a trailer to my marketing/launching todo list.
Thanks for popping by Eric. Nannette is an inspiration in many ways!
