Deep into the Dark by P.J. Tracy
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
This is the first book I’ve read by P.J. Tracy, and for the most part I really enjoyed it.
The story is about two interconnected narratives: a serial killer is lurking in L.A. at the same time two brutal murders occur in less than 24 hours, one the abusive boyfriend of former junkie turned bartender Melody, and friend of Army veteran Sam Easton, who suffers from PTSD. In the eyes of one Senior LAPD Detective, Sam is the #1 suspect.
Enter up-and-coming LAPD Detective Margaret Nolan, who doesn’t believe Sam is responsible for either murder. Despite her lower rank, her boss lets her run the investigation (that seemed a bit contrived to me).
There’s a lot of POV shifting going on, which I generally don’t mind, and the chapters are short, making for a quick-paced read. And yet, as much as I enjoyed the book, there were things that pulled me out of the story, not the least of which was the overuse of Deep Into the Dark references. I also felt the main characters could have been a little more developed; yes, they had faults, but it was those faults that were showcased, over and over. That said, this is probably the first in a series, and so there is plenty of room for everyone to grow, and the ending is satisfying, if not entirely unexpected.
