Bring Me Back by B.A. Paris
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
This is the third book I’ve read by B.A. Paris in as many weeks, and while it was good, it definitely wasn’t in the same class as Behind Closed Doors (rated 5) or The Breakdown (rated 4).
The premise, about a man, Finn, and his fiancee, Ellen, delves deeply into the disappearance of Ellen’s sister, Layla, the former love of Finn’s life. Before long, Finn is receiving signs signalling that Layla may still be alive 12 years after her disappearance at a gas station and it’s all a bit creepy.
Bring Me Back starts off solid, but at the halfway mark, I think, “Oh, please, do NOT make “this” happen.” (“This” will remain undefined so as not to provide a spoiler.)
But “this” does. Sort of, albeit with a tiny twist. And while all the ends are neatly tied up (and sometimes, you know, I don’t want all my ends neatly tied up), it’s just a bit too predictable.
Paris writes a good suspenseful page-turner. And I do like her style: short chapters, clean POV shifts. I just wish this particular book was as good as her first two. That said, it’s worth reading. 3.5 stars.
