Synopsis: Lydia, daughter of Swatara Creek Police Chief Aaron Brubaker, handles the property transaction when Clay Stoneroad, a famous writer, moves to the rural area and, shortly after, becomes involved in a relationship with Jason Russell, the writer’s handsome but feckless stepson.

Odd events follow as the Stoneroad family settles into their new home. The writer claims he’s being stalked, then rejects it as a figment of his imagination. Vickie Walker, a strange young woman arrives in town and claims Nan Calder, the writer’s secretary, is her missing sister, which Calder denies. Russell is murdered and Lydia becomes the prime suspect with discovery a gun her father insisted she carry is missing. Then Diana Wozniak, reporter for a sleazy tabloid, is the victim of a hit-and-run accident and police learn she had attempted to blackmail the writer.

State Police are handling the murder investigation and Aaron Brubaker is frustrated he can’t be involved. Daniel ‘Sticks’ Hetrick, former chief, Aaron’s friend, and now a county detective, is determined to prove Lydia’s innocence and engages the help of Flora Vastine and Harry Minnich, officers he’s mentored.
